"Finding your motivation comes from those moments in real life when you  observe how you present when you are thinking, and recalling a memory or 'snapshot', really, that should relate to your character’s world. Just as in real life conversation or communication, we are constantly calling forward snapshots of our pasts that trigger emotions, produce feelings ideally if we are lucky and honest and open the help to  bring our character to life. Much the same way in which we draw from the memory of an experience as we tell the story about it, our imaginations need to create the visual memory that our words describe as well as trigger the emotions that our character feels. From the most mundane to the most complicated.  Actors often forget to create the movie in their mind from the words they are speaking. When you can see it, it becomes real to you, and observers, that is the audience,  can see it and your “performance” seems real and convinces the audience to suspend disbelief and play along with you. Most dialogue tells a story that has visual elements. Anything we describe or explain or relay as our character can be convincing if if we convince ourselves  we experienced it. I call it making the movie in your mind, then stepping in to it, wholly committed the way children do. When they pretend they immerse themselves in the world they’ve created and believe it to be real. Our job is simply that. To create a world that is so clearly defined for us that it’s only natural to speak from the memory because for the while we are pretending, it isn’t a game it’s real. We have a pass to play. Too may of us are afraid to do that because we are afraid to look silly or to do it wrong. This is where watching yourself on tape helps you establish parameters for yourself as an actor. You can see what you’re like when you think, smile, laugh, get angry etc. Then watch your auditions and ask yourself if you’re being honest. Is that really how I laugh, smile, argue, ask questions, look scared, so on and so on. As long as you are being honest with what you’re seeing, you’ll be able to make the necessary adjustments and improve your scene exponentially" . THIS IS WHAT I TRY TO TEACH IN MY CLASSES.
